Surya Namaskar B comes from the Ashtanga Yoga School as taught by Sri Pattabhi Jois. It is a powerful, energizing practice that builds heat, strength, and tapas. It facilitates focus and clarity. It is traditionally taught with a transition vinyasa that takes you through plank, chatturanga dandasana, upward dog (urdhva mukha svanasana, and downward dog (adho mukha svanasana), to switch between your right and left sides. If you’ve been to vinyasa classes you are probably familiar with this. The full chatturanga takes a lot of upper body and core strength, so if you are new or have any wrist or shoulder injuries or weaknesses please modify by taking your knees down and only lowering your shoulders a couple inches. This practice is meant for days you are feeling strong and energetic, you should leave it on the backburner if you’re feeling low energy or sick. But sometimes you can reach for it when you’re feeling cold, sluggish or depressed and need an effective energetic pick me up! Below is a quick chatturanga tutorial video to practice with before trying the Surya Namaskar B.
